  • When Should You Consider AC Replacement?

    March 1, 2019

when should you consider ac replacement

If they’re maintained properly, our AC units can last a good, long while before they need replacing. That said, every appliance meets its end eventually, and the AC is no exception. Of course, it’s better to know when to get a new unit before the current one breaks for good, if only so you’re not left without cool air for too long.

But how do you know? When should you consider AC replacement? Hopefully these handy tips from the AC experts at Acree Plumbing, Air & Electric will provide a clearer answer. If you find yourself experiencing a few of these scenarios, we’d love to help you out!

It’s Getting Up There in Age

Most AC units are designed to work anywhere from 10 to 15 years, depending on how well you maintain it. An AC unit that you perform routine maintenance on, calibrate and inspect regularly will last you toward the higher end of that range, while a unit you do the bare minimum on will hang around for 10 years or so.

If your AC unit is getting up there in years, then it’s time to at least consider a potential replacement. And if yours has done well and hung around for the 13-15-year range, then we’d recommend seriously looking into a new one before your current unit gives out.

    Abnormally High Energy Bills

When your AC unit is operating like it’s supposed to, then your energy bill will reflect the amount of energy you’re using – simple enough. But when your AC starts going haywire, it’ll have a tougher time cooling your home to the correct temperature quickly enough. As a result, it’ll have to overcompensate on its end to make up for the lack of power.

You’ll obviously notice this when your eyes bulge out of your head as you read the energy bill. If it happens once or twice, you might be able to write it off as a seasonal consequence. But if it happens too often, then it’s time to get your AC checked out – and potentially replaced.

    Humidity Levels are Off

Although your AC isn’t as effective as a dehumidifier, it still clears the moisture out of the air to some degree – at least enough to where it shouldn’t be a problem under normal conditions. But as your AC deteriorates, it will struggle to eliminate the humidity and you’ll notice much more humid air indoors.

Alternatively, the opposite could happen, where it takes out *too much* moisture. Either one of these problems are warning signs.
