Don’t Ignore These Sounds in Your AC

Buzzing

When you hear a buzzing sound coming from your AC system, it’s most likely because something has gotten jarred loose. However, buzzing also happens when a component of your system is dirty – such as an air filter or coil – and when something gets broken.

Like with most noises, if you notice the buzzing sound but it goes away soon, it’s probably not much to worry about. However, keep an ear out and don’t be afraid to take some action if it happens multiple times.

Banging

We need to be specific here: what we mean is when you hear continuous banging noises coming from the ducts of your AC system, not just a few sporadic instances. Because although most of us hear this sound, it’s usually because air is heating up or cooling down in our ducts, and the metalwork is just adjusting by expanding or contracting.

Don’t pay much attention to it if it’s happening infrequently. But sustained banging noises are cause for concern.

Squealing/Squeaking/Screaming

These high-pitched, prolonged sounds occur when a part such as a joint, ball bearing or a belt has gotten loose. The whirring of the mechanical components will produce these extremely irritating noises, and you’ll need a professional technician to come fix it.

Rattling

This could be thanks to a wide range of culprits. It could be something as simple as some wayward debris like branches or some other environmental hazard getting stuck in your AC system, or it could be because the structural integrity has started to worsen.

That’s a big difference! Your best bet is to let an expert inspect your unit to see what’s going on rather than try to pry apart your AC system yourself.

Whistling

Although not as serious as some of the other worrisome noises you may hear, any time you notice some whistling coming from your AC system, it’s probably because you’re experiencing a leak. It’s not going to bring your system’s performance to a screeching halt, but if you leave this condition untreated for too long it’ll develop into a much more serious repair.
